Stories from my Sketchbook . . .
I live in a coastal town. The Camden Haven River runs right past the end of my street and North Haven Beach is only a short walk away. I really like living so close to the water. I like the sound of it and the smell of it and the beauty of it. Even on a crappy, overcast, rainy day our river is beautiful . . .
And because we are a coastal town, everywhere you look there are people in, on and around the water. People paddling, swimming, surfing, kyaking, and boating. Especially boating. There are boats all over the place. They are on trailers parked in driveways (and on front lawns), and in queues lined up at the boat ramps, and idling about in the lagoons, and chugging up and down the river, and moored in any one of our small local marinas.
I like looking at all these boats too―there are so many different shapes and sizes and styles (and names―there are some hilarious names out there . . .’Ship for Brains’―HA!) and it always looks like everyone on these boats is having a simply fabulous time (except perhaps those still parked on the lawn or in the driveway . . . )
But that’s as far as it goes. Looking. I like looking at boats. I have no overwhelming desire to actually be on one.
To be perfectly honest, even sketching these boats from my nice, stable, dry spot (under a tree) was starting to make me feel kind of queasy . . .

Such a wise man Mr Milligan. One of my favourite’s of his is “I have Crohn’s disease and he has mine!” and “Little worm little worm wriggling on your belly. Would you like to come inside and see what’s on the telly!” I totally agree with Pam’s comment too Sally. Your sketches are so emotive. You can literally feel the content…well I can 😜

Thanks Judy. Spike Milligan was also one of my dad’s all time favourites. I have a very vivid memory of walking into our lounge room many years ago and seeing my dad watching a Milligan skit and literally doubled over in tears laughing. When I asked him what was so funny at all he could gasp out was ‘Splat! Red-guts.’ He never did explain further (and I never saw the skit) but Dad never saw a picture of Spike again after that without starting to giggle ‘Splat! Red-guts . . . ‘

I can totally relate Sal. The only time I have laughed uncontrollably reading a book was the one Spike wrote on his war experiences….it started ‘Caw, said the crow. Balls, said Milligan’ and just as an aside…..in relation to one of your earlier blogs….I can state, uncategorically, that dunking an arrowroot in a Lemon and Ginger tea doesn’t work….just tried it!

I actually enjoy boating — motor, sail and the various versions of those, kayaking or canoeing, but I will never ever, fricking ever, own a boat (having observed and participated in the maintenance of other people’s boats). What’s that saying? A boat is a hole in the water you pour money into…
